ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said that he does not take orders or wait for the umpire’s call but believes in the power of people’s mandate.
Nawaz addressed the media after appearing in the accountability court for the hearing of the corruption case against him. He said that the corruption cases filed against him by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) hold no solid evidence against him, thus striving to gain false evidence.
He added that unlike former president Pervaiz Musharaf he and his daughter Maryam Nawaz are facing trial rather than faking illness or raising alarm about misperceived security threats. He said that not long ago Musharaf had stated that Nawaz and Benazir Bhutto will never come back to Pakistan, yet Nawaz stands here respecting the constitution and supremacy of law.
Nawaz stated that Musharaf is fooling the courts and the people with lies. Sharif said that he had paid a price for upholding democracy and is still paying.
Sharif criticised Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan’s reference to umpire’s signal in the 2014 anti-government protests, claiming that those accusing others are the ones taking orders and signals.
Nawaz raised questions on NAB’s role, stating that it may be that it is still being used against him like it was used before 2002 general elections. He shed light on abolishing rules that were made during times of martial law.
Sharif claimed that he had discussed the matter of caretaker Prime Minister with PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as only two months are left in the general elections.
Former PM urged all democratic forces to join hands against the umpire so that democracy prevails. He also said that the media should play a vital role in revealing the truth to the masses.
